Blue books are piling up on my table. I’ve got papers to write. So, like any other self-respecting graduate student, I’ve decided to start a blog. I imagine that most of my posts here will cover topics in history, philosophy, and theology, but I’m sure all kinds of posts (beverage suggestions and maybe even a comment on music) will sneak in here on occasion. Ultimately I’d like for the blog to be an open resource for those with whom I’m in frequent conversation, the least of those not being my good friend Steven, whose blog can be found here. Over the years I’ve found his musings helpful in my own reflections on particular ideas and issues. He also provided the name for this blog, after I was demoralized as a result of the titles “Papal Bull” and “White Smoke” being taken.
One thing I imagine I’ll be doing frequently is commenting on books as I read them. I’m working my way through a number of books, including The Two Towers and In the Wake of the Plague by Norman F. Cantor. I’ve found the former to be a stimulating for good reflections as the latter is for negative ones. Despite the fact that one is fiction and the other is a history, I might say one has a much higher truth value than the other. I’ve poked at Cantor’s other works and enjoyed the portions I’ve read, and most scholars agree that Wake is his most enervated book.
I hope if you choose to read something here you will not have wasted all your time.
